'Extraordinary Women' is a new musical, adapted from the novel by Compton Mackenzie, set amidst the windswept isle of Sirene. It bursts onto the stage for the first time with a score by Tony Award winner Sarah Travis, lyrics by Richard Stirling and an all-star cast of Jack Butterworth, Sophie Louise Dann, Jasmine Kerr, Amira Matthews, Amy Ellen Richardson, and Caroline Sheen. This lively adaptation captures the essence of a group of women who dare to imagine a world beyond societal constraints, and it does so with both humor and heart.

The story centres around a group of women who challenge traditional expectations in early 20th-century society. We are first introduced to three mythic creatures dressed like shimmering goddesses singing beautifully. However when Rosalba (Amy Ellen Richardson) arrives, she quickly stirs the waters of this bohemian paradise.

At the center of the story is Rosalba, a spirited woman whose romantic schemes and fearless desire for freedom set the tone for the entire play. Her devoted lover, Aurora (Caroline Sheen), follows closely, investing in a grand villa in hopes of nurturing their love in a sanctuary free from societal expectations. Their relationship is portrayed with tenderness and complexity, highlighting themes of love, independence, and mutual support.

The production’s set design consists of attic portals linked by a classic stone balustrade, with a stunning backdrop inspired by Seurat’s brushstrokes, finished in terracotta and white. The lighting, expertly arranged by Alex Musgrave, bathes the scene in a warm attic glow, creating an intimate yet expansive atmosphere.

The cast delivers energetic performances, capturing the playful camaraderie and rebellious spirit of Mackenzie’s characters. The dialogue crackles with humor, and the underlying message of female empowerment resonates strongly in today’s context. This adaptation not only celebrates the freedom of its characters but invites the audience to reflect on the ongoing quest for independence and authentic living.

Overall, "Extraordinary Women" is a captivating theatrical experience—an empowering, joyful tribute to women’s resilience and the enduring power of love and friendship. A must-see for anyone who believes in the transformative strength of daring to be different.
