Ragnhild Ekner’s perceptive and layered documentary builds a picture of a culture fuelled as much by creativity, passion and community as by machismo and violence. Her love letter to supporter culture is as expansive as it is surprising, touching on psychology and resistance, and foregrounding the fundamental social importance of ultra culture.



One Woman One Bra

Kenyan filmmaker Vincho Nchogu stuns with her humorous account of one woman’s fight to keep her ancestral land. It’s an exciting day in Sayet Village. The chief is giving out title deeds and everybody gets one, except orphan Star, who must first prove her kinship. The vultures are circling and her task seems impossible, until a potential solution reveals itself. There’s never a dull moment in Star’s quest, as she encounters catty neighbours, insidious NGOs and even potential love interests.

Finding Optel

South African sibling duo Mikayla Joy Brown and Jesse Brown co-direct this heartwarming feature debut, a quirky detective story that skilfully tackles childhood grief. Claire Abrahams, a self-appointed neighbourhood detective in Cape Town, runs a lost and found service where she locates anything and everything that has been misplaced. When Optel, the community dog, disappears, Claire goes in search of it. But his absence leads her down unexpected paths, even uncovering clues to her missing brother.



& Sons

This dramatic adaptation of David Gilbert’s 2013 novel, co-written by Oscar-winner Sarah Polley and directed by Pablo Trapero (TIFF ’15’s The Clan), stars Bill Nighy as a reclusive literary superstar who calls his sons home for an unbelievable announcement.


& Sons explores artistic aspirations and mortality in this very original and entertaining drama ultimately playing with universal themes: reunited family members reckoning with old grievances, misunderstandings, and regrets. At the centre of the whirlwind is a brilliant performance from Nighy, pivoting between inebriated repose and dervish-like fits of anxiety, positioning himself as a tragic patriarch who might just hold the key to making things right.



The Vile

Emirati director Majid Al Ansari’s chilling horror sees a woman pushed out of her own life. Amani, a dedicated housewife and mother, dotes on her husband Khalid and daughter Noor. Everything seems perfect until Khalid brings home a second wife. At first, Zahra seems sweet, but her mask soon falls away to reveal a darker side. Evil forces begin to inhabit the house and Amani finds it increasingly difficult to distinguish the real from the imagined.



Olmo

1979, New Mexico, USA. Olmo is stuck. Today is his turn to take care of his sick father even though he is only 14-years-old and would much rather be hanging out with his best friend, Miguel. But when Olmo gets invited to a party by his beautiful neighbour Nina, he will do whatever he can to get out of his duties, embarking on a journey of mischief and chaos. As the night unfolds, he may come to love the very place from which he has spent so long trying to escape: his home.
